Etymology 1
From Old Norse váði (“danger, peril”), cognate with Norwegian våde, Swedish våda. A derivation of vá (“disaster”), from Proto-Germanic *waiwô (“misery”), cognate with English woe, German Weh (Danish ve is borrowed from Low German).
