Etymology 1

From Proto-Vietic *viːt (duck). Compare Central Nicobarese [Nancowry] wet (duck).

Alves (2015) suggests a Proto-Tai origin (compare Proto-Tai *pitᴰ, and Proto-Hlai *ɓit, Proto-Ong-Be *ɓitD1). Although he later (Alves, 2021) expresses doubt towards the details of direction of borrowing. These items might just imitative, so there was no borrowing involved from any direction.
