The modern construction på vegne af nogen or på nogens vegne "on behalf of somebody" is influenced by Middle Low German van ēnes wegene, cf. German wegen (“because of”), originally a dative plural of way. The Low German expression has also inspired Swedish på ... vägnar, å någons vägnar.
