Etymology
Probably from an unattested *vetë, *vehtë - to blow (of wind), from Proto-Indo-European *h₂weh₁- (“to blow”). Cognate to Serbo-Croatian vetar (“wind”), Ancient Greek ἀτμός (atmós, “vapour, steam”), Lithuanian vėtra (“storm”), and others.
