vihdoin
Finnish
Pronunciation
- IPA(key): /ˈʋihdoi̯n/, [ˈʋiçdo̞i̯n]
- Rhymes: -ihdoin
- Syllabification(key): vih‧doin
- Hyphenation(key): vih‧doin
Etymology 1
From Proto-Finnic *vihtoin, possibly originally an instructive plural of *vihta (“time, occasion”) (in some dialects, vihdoin is attested with the meaning "once"; some Finnic cognates have different meanings, such as Veps vihtoi (“long ago”)). This could then be cognate with Proto-Samic *vëstē (whence Northern Sami fas (“again, once more”)), suggesting an earlier form *višta, which has been suggested to be a borrowing from Proto-Indo-European *wiH-to.[1]
