vihdoin

Finnish

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /ˈʋihdoi̯n/, [ˈʋiçdo̞i̯n]
  • Rhymes: -ihdoin
  • Syllabification(key): vih‧doin
  • Hyphenation(key): vih‧doin

Etymology 1

From Proto-Finnic *vihtoin, possibly originally an instructive plural of *vihta (time, occasion) (in some dialects, vihdoin is attested with the meaning "once"; some Finnic cognates have different meanings, such as Veps vihtoi (long ago)). This could then be cognate with Proto-Samic *vëstē (whence Northern Sami fas (again, once more)), suggesting an earlier form *višta, which has been suggested to be a borrowing from Proto-Indo-European *wiH-to.[1]
