Etymology

Inherited from Proto-Algonquian *wi·ʔsaka·xkwa. By surface analysis, wisahkël (sour, bitter) +‎ -akw (tree).

Cognates in several languages, with varying suffixes. Ojibwe wiisagi-mitigomizh (red oak) literally /sour-oak/. Cognate with Mohegan-Pequot wisacumus, Malecite-Passamaquoddy asahqahatoq.
