Etymology

From French saucisse.

The expected form after borrowing would be *xốt-xít or *xô-xít. It is possible that the present form is from a Southern dialect with final -t > -k.

The transformation of the close-mid vowel /o/ to the close vowel /u/ is inexplicable.
