Borrowed from French chiné, past participle of chiner (“to produce fabric in this manner”), from Chine (“China”) as the source of this technique.

- a patterned textile which has the pattern produced by dyeing the warp threads with the pattern prior to weaving, thereby blurring the image randomly when woven
