Etymology
Disputed. Possibly from Proto-Indo-European *h₁us-los, whence Old English ysle, Old Norse usli (“embers”), from *h₁ews- (“to burn”).[1] Alternatively from Proto-Indo-European *h₂us-los, compare Sanskrit उस्र (usrá, “reddish, ruddy; bright; matutinal”), from *h₂ews- (“to dawn”).[2] Also in view of the alternative with h-, there have been posited connections with *sóh₂wl̥, *sh₂wén- (“sun”), whence Latin sōl, and with *(s)ḱeh₃ih₂ (“shadow”), whence Albanian hije.[3]
