Etymology

Inherited from Proto-Tupi-Guarani *ɨβak (“sky”), from Proto-Tupian *ɨpʷa- (“high”).[1] Doublet of yvate. The sense of heaven is a semantic loan from Spanish cielo.

Cognate with Old Tupi ybaka.
