zârnă
Romanian
Alternative forms
- dzârnă — archaic
- zernă — regional
Etymology
From Dacian *dierna (“black”),[1] compare prodiarna. Compare also the hydronym Cerna, whose classical name Dierna was modified under the influence of the synonymous Proto-Slavic *čьrnъ.
The alternate theory, that it is derived from Proto-Slavic *zьrno (“berry, grain”), is highly implausible based on the archaic and regional forms.
Pronunciation
- IPA(key): /ˈzɨr.nə/
Noun
zârnă f (plural zârne)
- Black nightshade (Solanum nigrum), also known as sunberry.
- Synonym: solan
