zârnă

Romanian

Alternative forms

  • dzârnăarchaic
  • zernăregional

Etymology

From Dacian *dierna (black),[1] compare prodiarna. Compare also the hydronym Cerna, whose classical name Dierna was modified under the influence of the synonymous Proto-Slavic *čьrnъ.

The alternate theory, that it is derived from Proto-Slavic *zьrno (berry, grain), is highly implausible based on the archaic and regional forms.

  • IPA(key): /ˈzɨr.nə/
