zondvloed

Dutch

Etymology

From Middle Dutch sintvloed. Originally equivalent to now obsolete zin or zene (permanent, forever) +‎ vloed (flood), but folk-etymologically reinterpreted as the compound zonde (sin) +‎ vloed (flood), as the biblical Deluge was the result of human sinfulness. Cognate to German Sintflut, also Sündflut.
