Etymology
Internal origin, probably a derivation. For morphological and phonological reasons the ending seems to be the noun-forming suffix -ék. Compare fazék, hajlék. The base word is extremely uncertain. It was perhaps the archaic zsomb (“marshy, swampy area”). From a semantic point of view, the explanation seems good, but it has significant chronological difficulties. A direct derivation from German or an Iranian language is less likely. First attested in 1386.[1]
