zuider-

Dutch

Etymology

From Middle Dutch suder, from Old Dutch *sūthar, from Proto-Germanic *sunþra-. In Middle Dutch, the word was still used on its own; by Modern Dutch times, the word has turned into a prefix not encountered as an adjective proper outside compounds. Nonetheless, spellings where zuider was separated from the second element of the compound persisted for some centuries in Modern Dutch.
