From Proto-Germanic *twiskaz (“twofold, double”), from Proto-Indo-European *dwís (“twice, doubly; in two”). See also Old English betweonum, composed of be- (“by, near”) + twēonum (“the two”, dative plural noun) (compare the numeral Old High German zwēne).
