JavaFX : NullPointerException when clicking Button

Question

I have a non-fxml class where a Button is created (ButtonTester), and a fxml controller class (ControllerClass). I would like to accomplish that clicking on the Button invokes a certain method (f.ex. displaying text in a TextArea).

But when I click on the button, a NullPointerException is thrown, which I don't understand. I will paste the NullPointerException underneath the two classes.

The root layout is a BorderPane and the ControllerClass' fxml sits in an AnchorPane (BorderPane center), the Button is placed in a VBox (BorderPane top). For easy reading, I will only post the code concerning the Button and the method.
