I have dropped my external hard drive on the floor recently and wanted to know if the electronic parts and mechanical parts were damaged. I have no idea how to find this out from the output of smartctl. While being on it, I also want to test my internal SSD. I ran sudo smartctl -t short for my internal SSD and my external hard drive. I searched the web, but find mostly values that are not available for me and little or no information on what values of mine are important and what they mean.

Question: What are the important values, how do I interpret those, what is the conclusion for each my SSD and my hard drive?

I read that the values are normalized to 100 (0 = worst, 100 = best). If I consider this, for the SSD, the temperature has a low value; for the hard drive, the Load_Cycle_Count and the Free_Fall_Sensor. But I am not sure if those are really concerning.

Btw, I make backups of both, but not super frequently, so I want to assess the situation.

Output for SSD

:~$ sudo smartctl -l selftest /dev/sdb

With regards to the Crucial_CT240M500SSD3:

I think you should pay attention to:

5 Reallocate_NAND_Blk_Cnt 0x0032 100 100 --- Old_age Always - 16384

This (raw) value counts the number of retired blocks. These are block for which the drive determined they can not be reliably programmed or erased. Current value represents retired blocks vs. some reserve block threshold. Since current value is 100 we must assume there's plenty or reserve left but I don't know how trust worthy that is. 16384 seems like a lot of retired blocks to me and I personally would not consider this drive reliable. But I should add this is largely a matter of personal 'taste'.

And

202 Percent_Lifetime_Remain 0x0031 078 078 --- Pre-fail Offline - 22

The raw value represents percentage of intended lifetime used, the current value is simply 100 - (percentage used). Once remaining life hits zero the drive will become read-only.

With regards to the ST9500420ASG

Personally I never trust drives that were dropped, whether SMART reflects some damage or not. But let's assume you think differently and let's look at SMART values I'd keep en eye on:

5 Reallocated_Sector_Ct 0x0033 100 100 036 Pre-fail Always - 6

Personally I'd create a disk image of the entire drive and the purpose for that is two-fold:

  1. In case the drive is truly damaged we have a backup
  2. As we backup the drive it allows the drive to discover issues. If it runs into issue I'd expect the RAW value for reallocated sectors and possibly pending sectors to change.

and

197 Current_Pending_Sector 0x0012 100 100 000 Old_age Always - 0

If those raw values for reallocated and pending dramatically increase it would for me be confirmation the drive is indeed damaged.

As a side note ..

Some of the raw values for the Seagate seem alarmingly high, but the thing with these Seagate hard drives is that those values sometimes represent multiple things. For example seek errors is actually seeks + errors represented by one value. I ran often enough into questions and concerns about this that I decided to look into it and write a blog post about it:

https://www.disktuna.com/big-scary-raw-s-m-a-r-t-values-arent-always-bad-news/

Yes, the HDD could have been damaged, though likely you'd see evidence of that. The answer to interpreting S.M.A.R.T. data is already given here.

However, smartctl is not designed for testing an SSD! An SSD is quite shock resistant, and, were it to fail, it would unlikely be degraded partially. The SSD has other modes of failure. Specifically, writing to RAM gradually damages memory cells. "Most SSDs employ NAND flash memory technology. This type of flash memory can only be programmed and erased with a limited number of times." Though the SSD is provisioned with extra cells, eventually they get used up. A test program deigned for a hard disk drive that repeatedly reads and writes data can destroy the SSD. There were even Windows updates that attempted to "optimize" the SSD, causing early failure.

Executive Summary: If it ain't broke, don't fix it. If a cursory inspection shows it works, and a peek at data shows it's there, use it. And note that some HDD tests could damage it.
