I recently upgraded my PC to a machine that I was hoping to be my work horse. I moved the Windows 11 M.2 NVMe 512GB from a Dell OptiPlex 7080 Micro to Lenovo ThinkStation P920 and I've done a lot of cleaning up of stale drivers, OS cache & installed all the necessary drivers for the P920.

Unfortunately for me, the performance of this (new to me) machine is disappointing due to high latency when opening applications. There is a delay of ~20-30 seconds from the mouse click to when the application(s) launches. I'm not aware of any other issues since I'm stuck trying to fix this annoying problem.

I switched the power profile to favor performance on both the UEFI and Windows OS. I did the same thing for the GPU but nothing is helping as of right now. It would be much appreciated if I can get some help to troubleshoot & fix this problem.

Lenovo ThinkStation P920:

  • Dual CPU Intel Xeon Gold 5118 (12/24:24/48) @ 2.3Ghz
  • DDR4-2400 192GB RAM
  • Nvidia Quadro P620 2GB VRAM
  • M.2 NVMe SSD 512GB

TLDR: After a few hours of troubleshooting and trying multiple ways to fix this problem, I finally succeeded in fixing this latency issue.

What I've done to reach this result might or might not help anyone else having similar problems, but I hope it helps whoever is looking for a solution.

Here is what I did:

  • I checked the Device Manager again & found 4 RAID CONTROLLER devices that are missing drivers and Windows has no idea what drivers to use. So, I went to the Lenovo website and downloaded the storage driver pack, ran it and chose the "Install" option. This route did not work for some odd reason and the installer stated there was an error installing the drivers.
  • Next, I ran the same executable but this time I chose "Extract" instead of "Install". After that's done, I opened the extracted folder and looked for the folders that contain the drivers' files. Then, on Device Manager, right click on the RAID CONTROLLER -> Update drivers -> Browse my computer for drivers -> select the folder containing the drivers. There are 2 folders & 4 RAID CONTROLLERS, so I had to use the trial & error method until all drivers were installed. Rebooted, but the issue remains.
  • Next step, I rebuilt the Search and Indexing data on the drive with the issue and the extra one. This step took more than 2hrs as far as I can tell, but after rebooting it seemed to have helped a bit.
  • At this point I decided to add another SATA SSD to prepare for migrating to that one. While the tower was unplugged and open, I decided to remove the M.2 SSD, take apart & inspect the adapter to make sure nothing is chipped or broken on the SSD or the port. I reseated the SSD, put the adapter back together and installed it making sure it's snug and seated all the way. I turned on the workstation and to my surprise, the internal speaker beeped! Which it did not the few times I rebooted this machine! Another surprise was that a small LED screen turned on on the front panel that is used to display mobo codes (info or error). Again this one was not on & I wasn't aware of it until now.

Anyway, after logging in, I noticed things are back to normal and the system is snappy as it was before.
