I've been using the Everything search utility for a while now and it's great. Now I decided to use the toolbar too, and completely replace Windows Search, but there are some functionality differences I would like to get rid of. For example, I cannot type environ so that it would show me the classic option to access environment variable editing. I have to type sysdm.cpl to access it and then select the tab. With Windows Search I just type environ and the option appears as first result.

I do not want to learn every single service name I want to access to, like msconfig, regedit, sysdm.cpl, etc. These are simple examples, but there are many.

How do I add this functionality?

I tried calling the service directly, but obviously that is not what I want.

You can't make Everything show the same results as Windows Search. That would defeat its purpose entirely as it would get slowed down by extra functionalities such as web searches.

There's a very simple workaround for the presented specific problem, though. Create shortcuts for all the Windows executables you're using often and name them just like the Windows Search entries show or whatever you desire to have them memorized. Everything will then find such .lnk shortcuts.

One more thing you could do would be putting them in a single folder. You could then also define a filter within Everything -> Search -> Organize Filters... that searches only that folder. And enable Use Everything filters in Everything Toolbar preferences to be able to quickly switch to searching only among such shortcuts.

  • Check your search filters Search > Everything

    Search filter

  • Check if the drive your Windows OS is installed in, is included in Everything database -
Tools > Options > Indexes > NTFS > Select OS drive > Tick mark Included in database checkbox

    Everything Options

Terms such as msconfig, regedit, sysdm.cpl should yield valid results

Search results
