Windows forced me into the 24H2 update two days ago. The biggest problem I'm noticing is with the calculator. Usually I press the calculator shortcut button on the keyboard and can immediately type numbers and the calculator app will pick the numbers as I'm typing.

Since the update, the app takes considerably more time to load. Enough for me to view the loading screen (I didn't even know the calculator had a loading screen) and not being able to type anything until the calculator UI shows up on screen.

Calculator on Windows 11 taking a long time to load

Calculator is version 11.2411.1.0. The PC is a i7 13700k, 32GB RAM, with windows installed on an NVMe PCIe 4 SSD (not a PC spec issue).

Wanted to know if anyone else is having that issue and if its possible to fix it.

Note:

  • Already tried uninstalling/reinstalling the calculator. Problem still happens.
  • Problem happens on the first instance of the calculator. If I have a calculator opened, a second one won't have the loading time.
  • Problem also happens if I manually enter "calc" on the run dialog (which means is not an issue with the keyboard shortcut).
  • My girlfriend is on Win11 23H2 with the same version of the app and she does not have the problem which makes me believe it's a windows issue.

Microsoft had replaced the stand-alone calculator executable with a Windows "app", going back to Windows 10. Yes, it takes a long time to open, especially on machines with HDD. This further slowdown may be one of the slew of issues in 24H2 as mentioned at ZDNET, The Register, and ElevenForum.

The simple work-around is to download the old Calculator executable and use it instead.

  • Download the old application from Win7Games or other source.
  • As with any third-party application, check it at VirusTotal.
  • Unzip the archive and install the application.

Of course, there are numerous free replacements calculators, as well, such as some of those at Softonic and listed at Make Use Of, which load more rapidly than the new Windows app, and have many more features.
