Recently my Microsoft Surface 3's internal storage died, and as it's a tablet PC it's not worth trying to replace it.

I would like to use an SD card as a replacement for the drive but UEFI has no boot option for an SD card, it has only 2 options:

  • Network, USB, SSD
  • SSD only

Is there a way to add a boot option or do I need to install the grub boot loader to a USB drive? I plan on running Debian 12 on it.

You cannot do this so far as I know and in my experience.

The device boot options would have to read the card (like a Raspberry PI). The Surface does not have this option so no.

You can get decent SSD replacements or else use a Surface supported device.
