I have been working with Classic ASP since 1998 and have developed many complex solutions that are still running, some as SAAS and some unique without comparison. When I have the choice I use Classic ASP for everything including CMS, web portals, support forums and all types of websites. I also use PHP and provide many plugins for the popular CMS like WordPress, Moodle, Drupal and Joomla. However I only use those CMS to showcase my plugins that provide interfaces for my software.
No, Classic ASP is not deprecated and definitely not dead as some may try to claim. Yes, there are many new programming languages, but none have anything more to offer for my applications.
In fact, with Classic ASP I can do more than what is possible with all other languages. For example, with ASP I can perform these tasks:
- Read/write to both SQL and Access databases.
- Dynamically build web pages using all types of includes/templates.
- Create/manipulate files both below server root and above.
- Perform all web portal functions including mail and session management.
- Enable web pages to interact with system level DLLs.
- Edit in Notepad using simple and easy to understand syntax.
- Run as a desktop application with database on all Windows since XP.
Does any other language tick all of these boxes?
Why do I post questions here?
Being over 70 years old I have probably forgotten much of what I have learned and there are always anomalies to deal with on platforms that are forever changing.
I only post here because I cannot find a solution to a problem, and even then, usually after a many days of wrangling with alternatives and suggestions that were not a solution for my case.
So when my questions get marked down out of spite because they couldn't Google a quick fix or they didn't read properly, my message to them is "leave it to someone else who knows first hand!"
Also, if you don't have the time to read and re-read something three times, go away. Skim reading misses too much.
