Romanian

Etymology

Most likely Inherited from Latin sum. Passed through Vulgar Latin as *su, with the final -u being dropped centuries later as usual, after which a prothetic î- was added, to ease the pronunciation, as the form at the time was *s. For a similar development of prothetic î- being added at the beginning of one-consonant-words, compare the development of îl.
