Etymology

From över- (“over”) +‎ lägga (“to lay”). Earlier in the form överlägen, like German überlegen (“superior”) and similar to Swedish belägen (“located”), later transformed to överlägse, and then the -n has been added to make it more similar to other adjectives. Other adjectives that follow this pattern are avlägsen (“distant, remote”), underlägsen (“inferior”).
