From Old Norse þroti (“swelling, tumour”), related to Old Norse þrútinn (“swollen”), þrútna (“to swell up, become overconfident”), ultimately from Proto-Germanic *þrūtaną (“to swell”), possibly from Proto-Indo-European *trewd- (“to push”). Cognate with Old English þrūtian (“to swell with pride or anger”).
