Vietnamese

Etymology

Inherited from Proto-Austroasiatic *tacʔ (to break, to sever). Cognate with Muong Bi tếch, Khmer ដាច់ (dac), Koho tac (to cut), Halang kơtĕk (to snap, to break (rope)), Khasi thait (to snap), Khmu tec ("torn raggedly"). Doublet of dứt.

Attested in Quốc âm thi tập (國音詩集; c. 15th cent.) as 󱢎, composed of (MC sit) + (MC kaH) (modern SV: tất ), preserving earlier *k-t- onset cluster. The sound shift from proto-form /*s-/ > modern /t-/ must have already completed by this point in time.
