From Proto-Vietic *taːɲ, from Proto-Austroasiatic *taːɲ (to weave). Cognate with Khmer ត្បាញ (tbaañ), Bahnar tanh, Khasi thaiñ. Doublet of nan (bamboo tape) through an infixed form.
