From Proto-Vietic *taːɲ, from Proto-Austroasiatic *taːɲ (“to weave”). Cognate with Khmer ត្បាញ (tbaañ), Bahnar tanh, Khasi thaiñ. Doublet of nan (“bamboo tape”) through an infixed form.
