šieti

Lithuanian

Etymology

Smoczynski marks the word's origin as unknown.[1] Note, however, a strong phonetic and semantic resemblance to Proto-Indo-European *ḱey(h₂)- (to start to move), in which case compare Latin cieō (to set in motion, invoke) and Ancient Greek κῑνέω (kīnéō, to set in motion) (whence Russian кино́ (kinó, movie, kino)).
