Etymology

From Proto-Eastern Polynesian *a-popo from Proto-Oceanic *qa-boŋi-boŋi (cognates with Rapa Nui āpō, Maori āpōpō, Tahitian apopo and Tongan apō)[1] affixing *boŋi-boŋi (early morning) (cognates with Samoan pogipogi (dawn, dusk, twilight) and Tongan pongipongi (morning))[2] reduplicate of *boŋi thus doublet of – see there for more details.[3]
