From Αλέξανδρος (Aléxandros, “Alexander”) +‎ πόλη (póli, “town”). Named not for Alexander the Great but for King Alexander of Greece, who visited the town in 1920. Until that point, it had the Turkish name Dedeağaç (in Greek: Δεδεαγάτς).
