Τόμαρος

Ancient Greek

Etymology

A mountain with the same name exists in Berat, Albania, and other places also share a similar name, namely Tomorrica in Skrapar, Related to Greek temno "cut" + oros "mountain" (sharp mountain), from PIE *tom-/*tem- "cut", Vale of Tempe, Tomi city, Tomouroi priests of Dodona (wood-cutters), or chastified (with cutten tail, line oura), or tomarion, diminutive of tomos "slice, piece of land", tome, volume. Τόμαρος (Tómaros) and Illyrian *Temus, from Proto-Indo-European *dʰh₁s-o-. Altogether suggests a common Illyrian origin. Alternatively related to Albanian marr (obtain, get) from Proto-Albanian *mar(en)-, thus meaning "obtainer".
