From Ancient Greek ἐ- (e-), from Proto-Indo-European *h₁é-. Cognate with Sanskrit अ- (á-), Phrygian ε- (e-).
Prefix

- the augment, a prefix marking indicative past tenses (occurs only in stressed position)
