Cognate with Mycenaean Greek 𐁁𐀲𐀫 (a3-ta-ro), from Proto-Hellenic *áitʰalos, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂eydʰ- (“fire”). Compare Albanian jezull (“cloud of dust or smoke; ashes”) and Proto-Germanic *ailą (“fire”).
