Etymology

Unknown. Apparently equivalent to Ancient Greek ὑπόστασις ἐλαίου (hupóstasis elaíou), according to Hesychius of Alexandria.

According to Mircheva and Mihaylova (2020), from a zero-grade of Proto-Indo-European *gʷeh₂bʰ- (“to dive, dive in”) [1] – probably equivalent to Proto-Indo-European *gʷh₂bʰrḗn. Compare Ancient Greek βάπτω (báptō, “to dip, submerge”).
