βράθυ

Ancient Greek

Alternative forms

Etymology

The formation is similar to ἄσχυ (áskhu), μῶλυ (môlu), μίσυ (mísu) and σῶρυ (sôru). The word has been compared to Akkadian 𒄑𒇷 (burāšum), Aramaic בְּרָתָא (bərāṯā) and Hebrew בְּרוֹשׁ (bərṓš), all meaning "cypress", suggesting a Semitic origin.
