Etymology

From Byzantine Greek γκρινιάζω (nkriniázō), γρινιάζω (griniázō). Either from γκρίνια (gkrínia, “moaning, complaining”) +‎ -άζω (-ázo) (but possibly vice versa, a back-formation of γκρίνια from the verb). Or from dialectal Italian grignare (“grind teeth”) (contemporary Italian digrignare), from the Frankish *grīnan (“to grin”). Also, possible influence from the mediaeval synonym γρυνίζω (grunízō), associated to the ancient γρυλίζω (grulízō, “grunt”).[1][2]
