Etymology

    Metanalyzed suffix, formed by analogy to verbs from nominal stems in -αδ-, -αγ- with *-yéti suffix added. Possibly cognate with Proto-Germanic *-atjaną, compare -ίζω (-ízō).

      ῥῑ́πτω (rhī́ptō, throw) + ‎-άζω (-ázō) → ‎ῥῑπτᾰ́ζω (rhīptắzō, throw around)
