θυεία

Ancient Greek

Alternative forms

  • θυείη (thueíē), θυεῖον (thueîon)

Etymology

Maybe from θύος (thúos, burnt offering, incense), but the concept of "vase for pounding the incense" is rather strange. According to Beekes, perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *dʰuH- (to fly about, to dash).
