Generally derived from Proto-Indo-European *(s)kand- (“to shine, glow”), like Latin candeō (“I glow”), Albanian hënë (“moon”), Sanskrit चन्द्र (candrá, “shining”) and Old Armenian խանդ (xand). However Beekes suggests a Pre-Greek origin.
