Generally derived from Proto-Indo-European *(s)kand- (to shine, glow), like Latin candeō (I glow), Albanian hënë (moon), Sanskrit चन्द्र (candrá, shining) and Old Armenian խանդ (xand). However Beekes suggests a Pre-Greek origin.
