καρπάλιμος

Ancient Greek

Etymology

The entry by Beekes in his Etymological Dictionary of Greek reads (in paraphrase):

"The etymology is unknown. Schrader connected it with καρπός (karpós, root of the hand) as "handy", with further connection to Proto-West Germanic *hwerban (to turn). Others recognize the base form in κάλπη (kálpē, trot). A first syllable καρπ- can hardly be Indo-European. Beekes does not dismiss a Pre-Greek origin."
