From Byzantine Greek κουτσός (koutsós), of unknown etymology. Likely from from Middle Bulgarian коуцъ (kucŭ, “lame, crippled”), from Proto-Slavic *kucъ (“crippled, tailless”), of expressive origin. Another possibility is Late Latin coxus (“lame, crippled”), from Latin coxa (“hip, thigh”), from Proto-Indo-European *koḱs-.
