According to Beekes, from Proto-Indo-European *lerd- (to bend, crook) and cognate with Proto-West Germanic *lort (crooked) and Scottish Gaelic loirc (deformed foot).

As such, it would be suffixed in -ός (-ós, deverbal nominal suffix).
