μιαίνω

Ancient Greek

Etymology

According to Beekes, probably of Pre-Greek origin, due to the lack of clear cognates. Alternatively, from a Proto-Indo-European *smey- (to smear), and related to Proto-Germanic *smītaną (to sling, hit, smear); Beekes prefers Pre-Greek origin, but admits a possibility of the latter origin.[1]
