A modern or mediaeval αντιδάνειο (antidáneio, “repatriated loanword”), inherited from Byzantine Greek μπουκάλιν (mpoukálin),^[1] from Venetan bocal^[2] -Italian boccale (“jug, bottle”), or otherwise from Sicilian buccali (“jug, bottle”)-, from Latin baucalus, from Koine Greek βαύκαλις (baúkalis, “container used for the cooling of wine”); probably of Central Atlas Tamazight^[3] or Egyptian origin.^[4]^[5]
