παραλέχομαι

Ancient Greek

Etymology

παρα- (para-) +‎ λέχομαι (lékhomai)

Pronunciation

Verb

πᾰρᾰλέχομαι • (părălékhomai)

  1. (Epic, euphemistic) to lie with, sleep with (have sex with)

Usage notes

This verb is attested only in the aorist, but is generally given a present-tense lemma in dictionaries. However, the dictionaries disagree on what that lemma should be: Cunliffe and Middle Liddell give it as παραλέγω (paralégō) (a verb which is attested with completely different meanings); Autenrieth and Bailly give it as παραλέγομαι (paralégomai). However, the semantics make derivation from λέχομαι (lékhomai), as in LSJ, the most plausible.
