Derived from unattested adverb *πρώ (*prṓ), with locative -ι (-i) as in ἦρι (êri); ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *pró (“toward, leading to”). Cognate with Latin prō (“for, before”), Sanskrit प्रातर् (prātar, “early in the morning”), German früh (“id”).[1]
