σαίρω

Ancient Greek

Etymology

This word is commonly connected with σύρω (súrō, to drag, draw). According to Beekes, perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *twer-, like Sanskrit त्वरते (tvarate, to hurry) and Proto-Germanic *þweraną (to stir). Connection with ὀτρύνω (otrúnō, to stir up, encourage) is highly improbable.
