σπιδνός
Ancient Greek
Etymology
May be connected with σπίδιος (spídios, “extensive, wide”) and/or (the semantically closer) Latin spissus (“dense; slow, laborious”).[1] Both are possibly from Proto-Indo-European *speyd-, a d-extension of the root *spey- (“to expand, extend, stretch”). This etymology is incomplete. You can help Wiktionary by elaborating on the origins of this term.
