Etymology

Reminiscent of στιφρός (stiphrós), στέριφος (stériphos), στρυφνός (struphnós), perhaps a contamination. Possibly from Proto-Indo-European *(s)ter(h₁)- (to be stiff; be rigid; exert) and related to Proto-Germanic *stribāną (to strive).
