στύπος

Ancient Greek

Etymology

Traditionally connected with Old Norse stúfr (tree stump) and Latvian stups (broom). See Proto-Indo-European *(s)tewp-. According to Beekes, a Pre-Greek origin is a good possibility due to the presence of the byform στύμος (stúmos).
